The President of the Government Louis Mapou has sent a message of support to the Prime Minister of Tonga following the volcanic eruption followed by the tsunami that devastated the archipelago.
“As our region and the world continue to grapple with the coronavirus pandemic and the consequences of climate change affecting our blue Pacific continent, the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai undersea volcano on January 15, 2022, was a reminder that we are never immune to the virulence of natural phenomena,” said President Mapou in his letter to Siaosi Sovaleni.
“I learned with great sadness the considerable damage caused by this volcanic eruption in your country, which has disrupted the lives of your fellow citizens,” added Louis Mapou. Before addressing the Tongan Prime Minister, on behalf of the entire population of New Caledonia and the collegiate government, “our deepest sympathy at this particularly painful and difficult time.
